Kariega Game Reserve

Overview

Situated near the coast, just 140km from Port Elizabeth, the 10, 000 hectare Kariega Game Reserve is home to an astonishing diversity of plant, bird and animal species and boasts two rivers, the Kariega and the Bushman. Including the iconic “Big 5” among its animal inhabitants, this family-run game reserve is the ideal place to get back to nature while enjoying cosy well-appointed accommodation, stunning scenery and delicious food and drink.

Accommodation at Kariega Game Reserve comes in the form of 5 luxury lodges.

Main Lodge

The Main Lodge offers air-conditioned log chalets with en suite bathrooms and spacious private viewing decks but honeymooning couples may prefer to opt for Ukhozi Lodge. Consisting of 10 lavish suites tucked away among the vegetation, occupants of this richly decorated lodge can enjoy access to their own private decks and plunge pools offering sweeping views over the valley.
River Lodge

For secluded riverside accommodation reserve one of the large thatched suites that make up River Lodge. Named because it nestles right on the riverbanks, this lodge includes a library, swimming pool and spacious deck from which you can view the waters of the Bushman River and any bird and animal life which may venture down to drink or fish for food.
Ukhozi Lodge

Nestled in the bush are 10 luxurious Ukhozi Suites, crafted from log and each featuring a private plunge pool deck area offering panoramic vistas of the valley. This lodge compromises of luxurious facilities including an en-suite bathroom, cosy living space and African inspired interiors.
Settlers Drift

The Settlers Drift is located in the untouched parts of the Kariega wilderness, offering luxurious tented accommodation with incredible views of the Bushman’s River. Surrounding the Settlers Drift you’ll find a restaurant, bar, wine cellar, spacious pool deck, a library and spa facility.
The Homestead

The Homestead offers comfort and convenience with the luxury of privacy. Set in the remote part of the reserve, the Homestead aims to provide home from home amenities, allowing your honeymoon to envelope intimate living with everything you need in one place.

Facilities

The safari lodge is home to its own Kariega Wellness Centre which is composed of two treatment rooms and a gym. You can enjoy everything from massages to facials at this soothing retreat – the perfect way to relax and unwind in between safaris. Dual treatments are available so couples can savour their massages side by side.

Game viewing is obviously the priority of Kariega guests and this is reflected in the park’s daily schedule which includes two safari drives, one in the morning and one in the afternoon/evening, as well as river cruises. As well as the Big 5, the reserve is home to a multitude of other species, including eland, zebra, hyena, wildebeest and giraffe; there are also many species of bird and insect.

As well as these cruises and safaris the game reserve offers a Bush Camp experience which allows you to camp out under the stars after enjoying the usual afternoon game drive, a boat cruise and a highly interesting and informative bush walk. The following morning you will be taken on an early morning safari before being returned to the lodge for a hearty morning meal.

Canoeing and fishing are also available at Kariega Game Reserve. Alternatively you can venture out of the park to play a round of golf at the Royal Port Alfred course, just 20 minutes away, or enjoy a little day trip to the stunning golden beaches of Kenton-On-Sea, a quarter of an hour from the reserve.
