Overview

Consisting of spacious luxury tents set among the lush forest lining the banks of the Mara River, Governors Camp was once, as its name suggests, a favourite safari spot for the country’s governors who came here to hunt and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

These days the camp allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty and wild nobility of the Masai Mara Reserve, while still enjoying a selection of must-have modern amenities to ensure your optimum comfort.

Honeymoon resort information

Room Types

Accommodation at Governors Main Camp consists of 37 large luxury tents complete with en suite bathrooms and flushing toilets. Each tent also boasts a private veranda where you can sit in the mornings and evenings and savour unparalleled views over the Masai Mara and the Mara River. All of the tents are spacious and airy and allow plenty of natural light to flood in, giving you a cosy home-away-from-home feeling without being constricted.

There is also a dining tent and a bar tent, both of which offer similarly sweeping views over the landscape.
  • Safari tents

All Safari tents at Governors Main Camp feature an en-suite bathroom and private Verandah, plenty of light seeping through the camps, allowing you to wake with ease. Some camps feature views of the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara and the Mara River.

Facilities

During your stay in the Masai Mara you will be able to enjoy twice-daily game drives in custom-built 4 X 4 land rovers, accompanied by experienced guides who will be able to tell you all about the wide variety of species you will be viewing.

To get an even more close-up experience of the bush, walking safaris are also available. These excursions are led by highly trained guides and Maasai scouts, who will be able to inform you about Maasai culture, medicinal uses of local plants and even teach you how to track everything from buffalo and giraffe to zebra and lion. These safaris generally last between one and a half to two hours, and end with a lavish barbecue breakfast complete with champagne.

To gain a bird’s eye view of the breath-taking landscape you can opt for a Hot Air Balloon ride, which departs from Little Governors Camp, also on the banks of the Mara. Departing at sunrise, the ride lasts for an hour, and when you alight you will be treated to a delicious champagne breakfast.

During your stay in the reserve you will also have the chance to learn more about traditional Maasai culture by paying a visit to the Mara Rianda community of 48 homes. Here you can mingle with the Maasai and visit their colourful market, where you can purchase items of beautiful traditional beadwork – an enriching cultural experience you are guaranteed never to forget.

Restaurants

Wining and dining at Governor’s Main Camp are provided by the separate dining and bar tents. Breakfast and lunch buffets are served al fresco and the campfire is lit at sunset. Picnics / packed meals can be provided for those who would like to head out on full or half day game drives. Bush meals are available to book at an extra cost.
  • Restaurant/bar tent

The dining tent faces out over the breath-taking Mara Plains and is the perfect place for a romantic candlelight dinner, while the bar tent provides an ideal venue in which to relax with a drink and admire the rippling waters of the Mara River.
